ELSA

What is ELSA?

ELSA is an initiative developed and supported by educational psychologists. ELSA recognizes that children learn better and are happier at school if their emotional needs are also addressed.

Most ELSA work is delivered individually, but sometimes small group work is more appropriate, particularly in the areas of social skills and friendship. Sessions are fun and we use a variety of activities such as: games, role playing with puppets or therapeutic activities such as mindfulness or arts and crafts. ELSA sessions are held in our own 'ELSA Room' which provides a quiet and safe space for the child to feel supported and nurtured.

At ELSA, we aim to provide support for a wide range of emotional needs:

Recognising Emotions

Anxiety

Self-esteem

Social Skills

Friendship

Anger

Loss and Bereavement

How does ELSA work?

Children are usually referred for ELSA support by their class teacher or the ALNCo. Teachers discuss the referral forms and identify and prioritise which children need additional support. With the aims of the program in mind, we then plan support sessions to support the pupil to develop new skills and coping strategies that allow them to manage social and emotional demands more effectively. The ELSA is a specialist teaching assistant with a wealth of knowledge and experience of working with children in a small group or 1:1.

We aim to establish a warm, respectful relationship with the pupil and provide a space for reflection where they can share their thoughts and feelings honestly. The school supports parents with referrals for specialist counselling, play therapy or to CAMHS. The Educational Psychologist who works with our school holds regular supervision sessions with our ELSA, and can offer advice on the suitability or nature of ELSA's involvement in complex cases.
